Goreng rises in a solid cell set apart with the number 48. His flat mate, Trimagasi, clarifies that they are in a pinnacle style office in which nourishment is conveyed by means of a stage that movements from the top, halting for a fixed period on each floor. Those on lower levels can eat just what those at the top leave them, and they can't accumulate nourishment (the cell is warmed or cooled to deadly levels if nourishment is kept). Consistently, individuals are arbitrarily reassigned to another level. Every inhabitant is permitted to acquire one thing with them, Goreng picking a duplicate of Don Quixote, and Trimagasi a self-honing blade called the Samurai Plus.
At some point, a bloodied lady named Miharu rides down on the stage, and Trimagasi clarifies that she drops the pit each month looking for her kid. Goreng sees her being assaulted by the two individuals fair and square beneath, and he thinks about hopping down to support her, however she executes them both and rides the stage down once more.
